Barcelona axes Pjanic as transfer purge continues

Barcelona made the announcement on Wednesday, as the two parties struck an agreement to terminate the midfielder’s contract, which was slated to finish after the 2023-24 season. He is now moving to the United Arab Emirates to play for Sharjah FC.

The decision follows a turbulent summer in which the club had to manage their wage budget while signing players like Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Jules Kounde.

After arriving from Juventus in 2020, Pjanic only made 30 appearances for the team because He played with Besiktas on loan for the 2021–22 campaign.

In a statement, FC Barcelona claimed that it and Miralem Pjanic had “reached an agreement to release the player from the contract tying him to the club until the end of the 2023/24 season.” The club publicly thanks the player for his professionalism, commitment, and dedication, as well as for consistently tailoring his contract to the needs and circumstances of the team. It sends him best wishes for future achievement and prosperity.

Samuel Umtiti, Martin Braithwaite, Philippe Coutinho, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Pjanic are the other players who have left Barcelona as part of the team’s ongoing purge. With Arthur moving the opposite way to Juventus as part of the transaction that brought the 32-year-old to Barcelona, the 32-year-stay old’s at Barcelona most definitely fell short of expectations. Pjanic’s stint will likely be best remembered for his disagreement with manager Ronald Koeman.

Wednesday’s Champions League opener for Barcelona will be against Viktoria Plzen.
